One of the most RAM-per-dollar VPS lines there is: $5.28/month on a 24-month term buys 4 vCPU cores and 8 GB of RAM for a $126.72 prepayment, with EU regions free of a location fee. But GTC 3(9) lets Contabo reprice at any time and treats silence as consent — the list price is not what you pay. The invoice is.

Pros

  • $5.28/month on a 24-month term buys 4 vCPU cores, 8 GB of RAM, 100 GB of SSD, a 200 Mbit port and unlimited traffic, charged as a $126.72 prepayment; the same plan is $5.61/month annual and $6.60/month monthly, so the 24-month term saves $31.68 against paying monthly
  • RAM per dollar is where this line wins: Cloud VPS 18 is $47.04/month on the 24-month term for 18 vCPU cores and 96 GB of RAM, a $1,128.96 prepayment
  • No setup fee on any plan read — all six tiers across all three contract terms show No Setup Fee, and the One-Time line in every Order Summary is $0.00
  • Only three contract terms exist (1, 12 and 24 months) and all three cards sit on one screen with the order summary: each tier prints its struck-through list price and a SAVE 15% or SAVE 20% badge, so nothing has to be clicked through to see the price
  • EU regions carry no location fee — European Union is the configurator default and shows Free, while the three US regions, the UK, Japan, India, Singapore and Sydney each print their fee in the Region tab
  • The six Core VPS tiers step up linearly (4 cores / 8 GB / 100 GB / 200 Mbit through to 18 / 96 GB / 600 GB / 1 Gbit), with no tier-naming trick where the name outruns the specification
  • Add-on prices are all published inside the configurator: an extra 100 GB of SSD $1.80/month, Windows Server $9.60/month, cPanel $27.50/month, Plesk $15.00/month, and Auto Backup (daily, 10 versions retained) $2.00/month, free if you pick No Data Protection
  • One account covers the whole ladder without changing provider: Performance VPS (AMD EPYC with NVMe) $13.00–$95.20/month, Max Performance / Cloud VDS dedicated cores $47.20–$167.20/month, Storage VPS $5.28–$35.60/month and Dedicated from $131.75/month for 12 AMD Ryzen cores
  • Nine regions and eleven locations: five data centres in Germany, US East, US West and US Central, Portsmouth in the UK, Singapore, Tokyo, Sydney and India — and the EU is the only option on that list with no location fee
  • The vendor published a full root-cause analysis of its own 2 September 2024 Nuremberg outage on 13 September 2024: a thunderstorm caused grid voltage fluctuations, cooling did not restart after the UPS switchover because of a control-bus fault, the hall hit 40°C and Contabo powered instances down to protect the drives. Not an attack, and not a storage-array failure

Cons

  • The $5.28/month headline is a 24-month effective rate that requires a $126.72 prepayment, against $6.60/month on monthly billing; and going straight to contabo.com/en/vps/cloud-vps-6 (no -core-) opens a different, older configurator — 24 vCPU cores, 120 GB of RAM, 600 GB of NVMe, a SAVE 8% badge, $70.58/month over 12 months and an $847.00 prepayment — so confirm the URL says cloud-vps-core-N before you buy
  • Location fees scale with the tier: on Cloud VPS 4 they run from +$1.30 (US Central) through +$1.90 (US East), +$2.65 (Sydney), +$3.00 (India), +$3.10 (Singapore, shown as Out of stock) to +$3.15 (Japan), and on Cloud VPS 18 the UK fee reaches $14.00/month — add the fee to your region before comparing the price with anyone else
  • Repricing is written into the contract: GTC 3(9) lets the provider adjust prices at any time in line with market developments, and 'the consent by the Customer to the price increase is considered granted if he does not exercise his special right of termination'. Contabo's own help centre confirms it: 'Occasionally, Contabo adjusts the price of VPS plans themselves.' The dated cases are a VPS 0 NVMe move from €4.19 to €5.10 gross, effective 18 April 2025 (+21.7%, a blogger reproducing the vendor notice) and a €5.99 to €7.20 renewal increase reported by a customer on 19 February 2025 (forum post reproducing the email)
  • The contract renews itself for a period equal to the initial term unless you terminate four weeks before the end, through my.contabo.com or in text form by fax or email (GTC 5(1)); separately, GTC 4(1) states that where the customer's regular place of abode is outside Germany, payment for all services falls due immediately, so the instalment schedule does not apply outside Germany
  • The exit is narrow: the 14-day right of withdrawal is for consumers only (GTC 5(5) — 'The right of withdrawal does not apply for businesses'), the refund knowledge-base article says an additional administration fee may apply and that unmet criteria may make you ineligible, backups are a customer obligation under GTC 3(7), and the vendor's own article states 'At Contabo we don't store customer data, so we are not able to recover any data loss' — with Auto Backup sold separately at $2.00/month
  • Availability is limited to the annual average of 99.9% physical connectivity in GTC 11(1), excluding force majeure, third-party or customer fault and maintenance announced in advance; there is no separate SLA document (/en/legal/service-level-agreement/ returns 404), no credit table and no claims process, while the homepage advertises 99.996% against the contract's 99.9%
  • Third-party evidence is middling: VPSBenchmarks bought and tested a Cloud VDS S NVMe in Nuremberg (€42.99/month) on 26 January 2026 and graded it Overall 55 with Network E, Raw CPU C, Disk IO C and Stability B, with Sysbench multi-threaded at 1,876 ops/sec against a site median of 3,351; WHTop shows 2.6/10 from 47 reviews, 9 recommending and 38 opposed, with zero official responses; and Trustpilot, G2, Capterra and HostAdvice were all unreadable in this run, so no aggregate score from them can be quoted

Who it is for

  • Buyers who want the most RAM per dollar and will accept a 24-month prepayment — Cloud VPS 4 delivers 8 GB of RAM for a $126.72 payment
  • Developers who need cores and memory for databases, containers or self-hosted services and do not want a managed panel — Cloud VPS 18 gives 18 cores and 96 GB of RAM
  • Anyone who will administer the server and run their own off-site backups, because the contract makes backup a customer obligation and the vendor states it cannot recover lost data
  • Buyers who want an EU location and intend to stay — European Union is the only free-fee option and Germany holds five data centres
  • People who need a US East, US West, US Central, UK, Japan, India, Sydney or Singapore footprint and will budget the location fee on top
  • Anyone who wants to move up within one account, from VPS to dedicated cores (Cloud VDS) to a dedicated server from $131.75/month
  • Readers who will diarise the renewal date and decide four weeks before it — that is the only way this vendor does not bite
